Healthy Options for Pancakes

Almost everyone loves eating pancakes. From the sweet taste to the light fluffy texture, they are sure to tickle the taste buds and bring joy to anyone who eats them. Pancakes are usually served during breakfast, but with its wonderful taste and many recipe variations, it can be eaten any time of the day. Usually, pancakes are made by mixing eggs, vegetable oil, enriched bleached white flour, baking powder, and whole milk. All the ingredients are mixed to make a batter, which is then fried on a hot griddle. The griddle should be covered with cooking oil to prevent the batter from sticking to the griddle.

Pancakes taste really good, so it is a pity that some people choose to avoid them because of health reasons. However, it is still possible to enjoy the great taste of pancakes without making bad health choices. There are healthier alternatives to the ingredients and cooking methods that are used when making pancakes.

Whole wheat flour is healthier. Enriched bleached white flour has undergone a lot of processes to get to its current state. Some of these processes are artificial and may entail the use of chemicals which are not good for the body. It is much better to use whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour is actually denser than regular white flour, so pancakes made from them are much more filling. However, to keep the pancakes light and fluffy, it is best to use only 2/3 the amount of flour that the recipe is calling for. Otherwise, the pancakes will come out thick and heavy.

Substitute olive oil for vegetable oil. Olive oil is a much healthier ingredient as it doesn't have as much cholesterol as the usual vegetable oil. However, olive oil smokes at a much lower temperature, so it is not advisable for it to be used as frying oil. The best thing to do is to substitute the vegetable oil in the batter with the olive oil.

Wheat germ is a great addition. Wheat germ is a great element to add to pancakes because it provides a substantial amount of nutrients and vitamins without affecting the taste and the texture. A total of seventeen vitamins and nutrients are gained by adding wheat germ into the pancakes. It is best to add a quarter cup of wheat germ for every two cups of flour required in the recipe.

Healthy oats can be added to pancakes also. Oats are healthy ingredients that are usually used in baking. They can be added to pancakes as well, to make them healthier. Pancakes have a relatively short cooking time, so it is best to use quick oats. For each cup of flour, a quarter cup can be substituted with the same amount of quick oats. They should be added along with the wet ingredients to allow them to absorb ample moisture before the rest of the dry ingredients are put in.

Use a non-stick spray to coat the griddle. Coating the pan with vegetable oil adds a considerable number of calories to the pancakes. It is best to use a spray to minimize the amount of oil used. There are a lot of sprays available, like olive oil and butter-flavored. Either of these will work well with pancakes.
